The Philippine Heritage Council of Manitoba (PHCM), Inc. is a non-profit, cultural group comprised of representatives from over 35 member organizations and individuals within the Filipino-Canadian community in Winnipeg.

It works actively to commemorate and celebrate the Philippines' independence from centuries under Spanish colonial rule (June 12, 1898). Since its inception in 1963, it has branched its role further in the community from week-long events during the month of June to now include year-round celebrations, events, and information sessions in support of heritage, multiculturalism, and positive acculturation.
==Introduction==

While these researchers pursue their different fields of inquiry they are united through the CCSAS with the common and shared objective of engaging in research focused on political, economic, business and social development of the South and South East Asian region, the socio-economic issues facing the large immigrant population from South Asia in Canada and the interface of South Asia with the Canadian economy. Currently 6 faculty members from UOIT have joined hands as founding members of the Center. In addition a number of faculty members from other universities in Canada and the world have given their support to the center as affiliated members.

==Goals and Vision==

* The goal of the CSAS is to be an interdisciplinary think tank and the voice in Canada for research on South Asian socio economic issues.
* Through its research and seminars/conferences the Centre will be able to influence Canadian trade and foreign policy towards this region.
* In order to be effective in achieving its vision, the Center will interface closely with the government of Canada. It will also act as a conduit of liaison between various South Asian trade and cultural organizations and forums and the government of Canada.

==Research Focus==

* The nature of research effort is very much interdisciplinary- this is a strong selling point of the Center and makes it more appealing to a wider body of researchers and social scientists. To start with this interdisciplinary partnership will amongst the faculties of business, social sciences, education and health.
* The Centers researchers from UOIT and their celebrative partners (wither inside or outside Canada) will explore all socio-economic, political and social issues affecting the life, well being, freedoms and civil liberties of the people of South Asia who are Canadian residents as well as the inhabitants of South Asia in their own countries.
* The Center will conduct interdisciplinary research in various areas with a business, economic and social focus.
:Some key areas of inquiry are
::* Economics of growth and development
::* Political Science and International Relations
::* Science and Technology - economic and social impact
::* Information Technology and its commercialization
::* Business Management
::* Social Sciences
::* Education, Learning, Literacy and Teacher Training
::* Health, Nutrition and Fertility
::* Private and Public Sector Governance and Corruption
::* Militarization, Peace and Conflict

==Legal Status and Management Structure==

* The Center is being run as a center of research at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.
* The organizational structure is non-bureaucratic and the Center functions through Group Coordinators who spearhead and supervise research in their respective Groups, while adhering to the overall vision and research goals of the Center. We are independent in our approach and thinking but operate as one large cohesive team to further the Center’s objectives.
* The Coordinator of the Center would call meetings and liaison with the Center’s researchers, associates and international institutes to further the Center’s shared vision.

==Financial Resources==

* Being a virtual center, its expenses are very limited. However, the Center has very little funds at the moment and current expenditures are being met from the $40,000 grant of the UOIT given to the Center’s Co-ordinator for conducting academic research.
* It is envisaged that the Center’s activities would be funded through donations, sponsorships, conference fees and memberships. In addition, research grants obtained by scholars would facilitate the hiring of Research Assistants to work on the Center’s various projects.
* The Center will actively solicit funding from various funding bodies and granting institutions.

==Activities and Services of Center==

* The Center will host a wide range of research, teaching and learning resources on its website for use by students at UOIT and elsewhere in Canada and the developing economies.
* Researchers will form research partnerships with Canadian based scholars as well as the international community.
* Researchers and their work will be popularized through media, working papers of the centre and journal articles. Work of the scholars associated with the centre will be posted on the Center’s website and available to everyone in the world.
* The Center will organize periodic conferences on defined themes pertaining to development.
Benjamin Chiu (simplified Chinese: 邱泽堃; traditional Chinese: 邱澤堃; pinyin: Qiū Zékūn; born December 27, 1970) is the founder of KillerApp.com, a popular comparison shopping site for computers and consumer electronics that was acquired by CNET Networks Inc. in 1999.

== Early Life ==

Born in Taichung, Taiwan, Ben, the only child moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina at eight months of age with his mother (Hsiu Lan) and father (Sheng Dien) where they lived for six years before moving to Toronto, Canada. He attended high-school at Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute in Scarborough, Ontario and graduated with honors and awards in Computer Science and Visual Arts. In 1993 he received his Bachelor's Degree in Applied Science, Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto.

When he was 11, Ben began to take an interest in programming. One summer, Ben's father assigned him to write a database system (using DBASE) for their family business. With help from his father, Ben started Linguasoft Corp. and sold his system to bookstores and libraries. To this day, the Royal Ontario Museum is still using his software.

Barely a teenager, Ben Chiu played table-tennis for the provincial (Ontario) team. Under the relentless training of renowned Yugoslavian coach Zoran Kosanovic, Ben won the Canadian National Championships (junior singles), Formosa Cup (men's singles) and took 2nd place at the 1984 U.S. Open (junior doubles). Oddly enough, Ben is cross-dominant (ex. plays table-tennis with his south paw but writes with his right hand).

In addition to high school, Ben also attended school for the gifted in visual arts. His art teacher once offered to buy one of his oil paintings but Ben declined. Some of his wildlife paintings have been displayed at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, Ontario. At the time, his style was inspired by Robert Bateman, Glen Loates and Andrew Wyeth.

== Career ==

In 1994 while the Internet was still in its infancy, Ben moved to Fremont, California to help manage his father's publishing business--Pan Asian Publications. While buying computer hardware for the company, he discovered it was tedious to browse through thousands of magazine listings for the best deals.

Instead, he cut the spines off publications like Computer Shopper and PC Magazine and keyed all the specs and prices into a database, page after page, one page at a time. After e-commerce sites began to appear on the Internet, Ben developed a web crawler that would automatically gather and update prices around the clock. This was to form the foundation for his new company.

Ben formally incorporated KillerApp, Corp. in 1995 and went on to pioneer the concept of online comparison shopping (also known as the price engine). This paradigm shift proved devastating to the computer publication industry. "Print" simply could not compete with the timely content and convenience of these specialized search engines.

The web crawlers at KillerApp ran 24/7, updating 1.5 million prices daily. Within two years, killerapp.com was receiving 14 million page views per month and 1/2 million monthly users. The site was also generating 150,000 leads per month for its base of 360 merchants.

In order to sustain the growth of its business, Ben raised two rounds of funding from angel investors that included: C.S. Ho (founder of Mitac/Synnex and honorary chairman of Computex); Charlene Wang (president of FIC and daughter of tycoon Y.C. Wang); Ming Chien (chairman of FIC) and Cher Wang (chairperson of VIA Technologies and daughter of Y.C. Wang).

In 1998, Ziff-Davis approached Ben with a buy-out offer. He declined but instead brought in Deutsche Bank to produce competitive bids. A long M&A roadshow ensued. Ben held due diligence discussions with Microsoft, ZDNet, Yahoo!, CNET, Excite, Lycos and Inktomi. On March 23, 1999 he sold his company to CNET in a stock swap valued at USD 54 million and joined CNET as the Director of Commerce Services.

== In the Media ==

Ben Chiu is the second Taiwanese American (since Jerry Yang co-founder of Yahoo!) to appear on the cover of Wired Magazine. Po Bronson chronicled Chiu's rags-to-riches story in his best-selling novel The Nudist on the Late Shift (ISBN 0-7679-0603-9). His story has also been recounted in Chinese by Peggy Teng (Chinese: 鄧海珠; pinyin: Dèng Hai Zhü) in her book 華裔網路英雄傳奇 (translation: Unique Passages of Overseas-Chinese Internet Heroes).
The B.C. Chinese Music Association (BCCMA) was formed in 1995 by enthusiastic Chinese music lovers who wished to promote Chinese music within our multicultural society. It provides a platform for Chinese music lovers and promotes Chinese music in the wider community. Its aim is to share Chinese musical culture with others to increase Canada's understanding of Chinese culture through music.

The BCCMA also has multiple divisions within its ranks, such as the B.C. Chinese Orchestra (BCCO) which regularly performs for cultural and festival events, as well as charities. There are also the B.C. Chinese Music Ensemble (BCCME) which caters to virtuosos and the B.C. Youth Chinese Orchestra (BCYCO) which seeks to train young musicians.

Beyond artistic or community events, the BCCMA also organizes lectures, master classes, concerts and exhibitions. It has helped coordinate such events as the Chinese Music Ethnic Classes competition at the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival since 2001 and collaborated with the Central Conservatory of Music for the Overseas Chinese Instruments Grade Examination in 2006.
As no country has ever won the title back-to-back (later achieved by [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dayana_Mendoza Dayana Mendoza] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stefanía_Fernández Stefanía Fernández] in 2009, both of them from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venezuela Venezuela]), Panikian had a significant historical hurdle to jump despite many pundits who argue that she was an even stronger candidate than her predecessor. Alice did not become Miss Universe 2006 (that honour went to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuleyka_Rivera Zuleyka Rivera] of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico Puerto Rico]), but she did finish in 6th place. Panikian is of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulgarians Bulgarian] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armenians Armenian] ancestry, which comes through her paternal grandfather and accounts for her Armenian surname. She studied broadcast journalism and resides in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto,_Ontario Toronto, Ontario] and aspires to be a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/journalist journalist] or a TV show host.

She also took the "Miss Photogenic" and "Best in Swimsuit" awards at the Miss Universe Canada Pageant.<ref>"''[http://womendiary.net/2006/03/22/alice-panikian-new-miss-universe-canada-2006/ Alice Panikian, New Miss Universe Canada 2006]''", Women Diary, March 31, 2006</ref>
Panikian was supposed to represent Canada and compete at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_International_2007 Miss International 2007] held in Tokyo, Japan, but due to schedule conflicts in college, she did not compete. Justine Stewart took her place.
Shaun Majumder is a Canadian comedian and actor.

Majumder was born in Burlington, Newfoundland and Labrador to a European descended mother from Newfoundland and a Bengali Hindu Indian father. He started his entertainment career as an announcer for the YTV game show CLIPS, and soon was hosting the network's popular morning kids show Brain Wash, where he was known as Ed Brainbin. He also hosted the "Slime Tour" segments on the popular game show Uh Oh!. Eventually he joined This Hour Has 22 Minutes in 2003, and also hosted 15 episodes of the Just for Laughs specials on television and participated in the Comedy festivals in Montreal. He was also a star of Cedric the Entertainer Presents, aired in the United States on the Fox network, and appeared in an NFB documentary on aspiring Canadian comics, The Next Big Thing.

Majumder has also starred in the CBC comedy pilot Hatching, Matching and Dispatching and the short film Plain Brown Rapper, as well as playing Kumar's brother in the 2004 comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
Majumder often plays an alter ego called Raj Binder. Binder is an awkward, nervous and usually sweaty Indian reporter with a strong accent. Binder first appeared in a sketch from a comedy showcase with some former YTV costars called The Bobroom, and also appeared on Just For Laughs and This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Majumder caused some minor controversy when "Raj" posed in the MegaStars group picture during the 2003 Heritage Classic NHL outdoor ice-hockey game.

Majumder made a guest appearance on two episodes of the television series 24, playing Hasan Numair. He also played Dr. Freddy Sahgal in the Fox TV series Unhitched, but the show was cancelled in May 2008.
In 2010 he had a guest starring role as Benny Natchie in Republic of Doyle and starred in Detroit 1-8-7 as Detective Vikram Mahajan.

In the summer of 2011 Majumder was cast in The Firm in the recurring role of Andrew Palmer, the lawyer at the firm who befriends Josh Lucas' character Mitch McDeere.
Nozuka was born to a Japanese father and a Canadian mother of English ancestry. His mother's half-sister is actress Kyra Sedgwick and his first cousin twice removed is Edie Sedgwick. Nozuka's mother raised him and his six siblings as a single mother. Nozuka is the brother of R&B singer George, actor Philip, and singer/songwriter Henry.

Nozuka began writing his own songs at age 12. The earliest of his songs on Holly, "Supposed to Grow Old" and "I'm in Peace," were written when he was 15. While attending St. Andrews College, an international boarding school in Aurora, Ontario, Justin learned to play guitar from classmates.[citation needed] He then went on to the Etobicoke School of the Arts, where he graduated from in 2007. His musical influences stem from artists such as Lauryn Hill and Marvin Gaye.

With help from a fellow Canadian artist, Damhnait Doyle, whom he met at a song writing workshop, Nozuka was introduced to Universal Records talent scout, Allan Reid. He recorded three tracks through Universal with Bill Bell as producer, leading Universal to request that Nozuka sign with their label. However, he decided he wanted to "record an album on (his) own, with (his) own freedom".

In 2007, Nozuka released his debut album Holly. The album is named after his mother who helped and supported his chosen career in music. The album has eleven songs to it and includes a hidden track following the final listed song "If I Gave You My Life". Many of Justin's songs deal with mature themes such as the song "Save Him", which is a fictional account of a woman abused by her husband. Another track, "Down in a Cold Dirty Well", is about his perspective being stuck in a well, watching his life flash before his eyes. "Criminal" describes the story of a drunken man facing the consequences of throwing a bottle into a street "where children play with bare feet", and suffers from the overwhelming guilt. In February 2008, Justin was nominated for a Juno award in the category of "New Artist of the Year", following the commercial and critical success of his debut album.

Denis Kang (born September 17, 1977) is a Canadian mixed martial artist of Korean and French descent. He was the PRIDE FC welterweight grand prix finalist in which he lost to Kazuo Misaki. Kang is a 2nd degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, originally trained and mentored by Marcus Soares.

== '''Personal life''' ==
Denis Kang was born in the French overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre & Miquelon to a Korean father and French mother. He and his family relocated to the Canary Islands and finally North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1988. Kang speaks fluent French and English, and is also said to be fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, which he learned via constant relocation. He has two younger brothers, the youngest of which, Julien Kang, is an actor in South Korea.

On September 23, 2006, Kang's fiancée, Shelby Walker, who was also a professional fighter, was found dead after an apparent overdose of pain medication. Kang had racked up a 23 fight unbeaten streak prior to his fiancée's death, but has since won only 7 of 16 bouts.

== '''MMA career''' ==
Denis Kang's MMA career began in 1998 at the Ultimate Warrior Challenge in Vancouver, Canada. Kang was successful in his debut fight, winning by submission (rear naked choke) over Eric Harcrow. Kang would go on to win his next 2 fights before going 2–5 over his next 8 with one no contest against Dennis Hallman. He would go 7–7 with one no contest in his first 15 fights, with a few convincing defeats.

After winning 5 of his next 6 fights, Kang signed a contract with Spirit MC, a South Korea MMA organization. Denis went 5–0 while fighting in Korea and was crowned the Spirit MC Heavyweight Champion. Following this, Denis relocated to Florida and joined American Top Team.

It was at this time that Kang caught the attention of the PRIDE Fighting Championships. Kang signed a contract with PRIDE and made his debut at PRIDE Bushido 6, where he defeated Japanese opponent Takahiro Oba via armbar at 4:24 of round one. Under the Korean banner, Denis went on to win his next two fights in PRIDE, with a victory coming over Englishman Mark Weir at PRIDE Bushido 10. In between fights for Pride, Denis fought American Albert Basconcelles and knocked him out within 12 seconds of the opening bell. At Bushido 11, Denis Kang continued his winning streak by knocking out Chute Boxe member Murilo "Ninja" Rua in 15 seconds in the first round of the PRIDE Bushido Welterweight (183 lb) Grand Prix. At Bushido 12, Denis submitted Armenian Amar Suloev via rear naked choke to advance to the semi-final round of the Welterweight Grand Prix. With this win, Kang was then 18–0–1 in his last 19 contests. However, after advancing through the semi-final round of the Bushido tournament and beating Akihiro Gono on November 5, 2006 he was defeated by Kazuo Misaki in the final at Bushido 13. Kang had torn his right biceps muscle earlier that night in his win over Gono.
Kang had only one match in 2007 after breaking his hand (an injury that will reappear over and over again) in a match against Jungkyu Choi for the Spirit MC Heavyweight Championship on March 11. Kang won via unanimous decision but was unable to compete for several months.

After the contract termination of PRIDE, Kang moved to K-1 Hero's maintaining the championship of Spirit MC. Kang made his K-1 Hero's debut on October 28, 2007, in "K-1 Hero's in Seoul". His opponent was Yoshihiro Akiyama who was returning to MMA after a 10 month suspension. Kang lost via TKO.

Kang next fight was on April 29, 2008, in the opening round of the DREAM Middleweight Granx Prix, losing to Gegard Mousasi via triangle choke.

On August 30, 2008, Kang defended his Spirit MC Heavyweight Championship by defeating Kim Jae Young by TKO due to strikes at 1:31 of the first round.

Kang defeated UFC veteran Marvin Eastman by TKO on October 25, 2008, at “Raw Combat: Redemption” in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The fight lasted 48 seconds.

== '''UFC''' ==
Denis Kang made his UFC debut on January 17, 2009 against Alan Belcher despite suffering from ankle injury. Although Kang controlled the fight, he lost by guillotine choke at the end of round two after a takedown attempt.

Kang redeemed himself with a victory over Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 97 by unanimous decision.

Kang faced Michael Bisping on November 14, 2009 at UFC 105. In an interview about his fight with Bisping, Kang revealed he wanted a title fight with Anderson Silva. Bisping TKO'd Kang in the 2nd round. Even though Bisping was the crowd favourite in his home town Manchester and Kang was being booed on, Kang dropped Bisping with a right hand in the first round which rocked Bisping. Kang followed Bisping to the floor and attempted submissions, but Bisping defended well and neutralised Kang's attacks despite Kang briefly having full mount. In the 2nd round Bisping secured a single-leg takedown and the momentum of the fight shifted : he unleashed a vicious ground and pound attack on the Canadian, which Kang failed to recover from. The fight was awarded Fight of the Night honours, giving both Kang and Bisping a $40,000 bonus check.

Denis Kang was cut from the UFC on Dec. 9 2009, along with Brock Larson, Rolando Delgado and Jason Dent. Kang recently announced he has signed with W1 MMA and will fight for their vacant middleweight title on December 18, 2010 in Montreal, Quebec.

== '''Post UFC''' ==
Denis defeated Dae Won Kim at W-1: Judgment day. Kang faced off against former WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho on July 18, 2010 at an Impact Fighting Championships event. The fight was declared a split draw.

Denis joined the Korean MMA promotion ROAD FC by signing a multi-fight non-exclusive deal.

Denis lost to Melvin Manhoef by KO due to a knee to the body early in the first round of their DREAM 18 New Year's Eve fight at the end of 2012.

== '''Personal life''' ==
Denis Kang was born in the French overseas collectivity of Saint Pierre & Miquelon to a Korean father and French mother. He and his family relocated to the Canary Islands and finally North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, in 1988. Kang speaks fluent French and English, and is also said to be fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, which he learned via constant relocation.[citation needed].

== '''MMA career''' ==

== '''UFC''' ==

In an interview about his fight with Bisping, Kang revealed he wanted a title fight with Anderson Silva.[10] Bisping TKO'd Kang in the 2nd round.

== '''Post UFC''' ==
