Gulzar Singh Cheema (born August 11, 1954) is an Indian-born doctor and a Canadian politician. Cheema was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba[1] from 1988 to 1993, and a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 2001 to 2004, making him one of only a few Canadian politicians to sit in two provincial legislatures since Confederation. He is the first Indian born to be elected MLA in Canada. He was also a cabinet minister in the government of Premier of British Columbia Gordon Campbell from 2001 to 2004, and was a candidate of the Liberal Party of Canada in the federal election of 2004.

Dr. Gulzar S. Cheema, MD CCFP was elected in B.C. in May 2001 to represent the riding of Surrey-Panorama Ridge. On June 05, 2001 Dr. Gulzar Cheema was appointed as a member of the Executive Council for the Government of B.C. as Minister of State for Mental Health. On January 26, 2004 Dr. Cheema was appointed as a member of the Executive Council for the Government of B.C. as Minister of State for Immigration and Multicultural Services. He was also a member of the Legislative Assembly in Manitoba for five years and served as critic for health, labour, housing, native affairs, sport and co-operatives, and consumer and corporate affairs. Before his election to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly, Dr. Cheema was a family doctor in Surrey; he has also practised medicine in Winnipeg and rural Manitoba. He received his bachelor of medicine and surgery from India’s Punjab University, interned at the University of Newfoundland and was a resident at Saskatoon’s University Hospital. In 1992 he was awarded the Canada 125 Medal for community service. To promote the health and welfare of the community, Dr. Cheema participates weekly on local multicultural radio talk shows and M Channel, a local multicultural T.V. Channel.
Presently Dr. Cheema is practicing family medicine and is a clinical instructor for the Department of Family Practice at UBC as well as the Medical director for iCON South Asian Division eHealth Strategy Office Faculty of Medicine, UBC. He currently lives in Surrey, British Columbia with his wife and children.

In the Manitoba general election of 1988, Cheema was elected as a Liberal in the northeastern Winnipeg riding of Kildonan. The Liberals went from one to twenty seats in the Manitoba legislature in this election, winning several Winnipeg seats from the governing New Democratic Party (NDP). Cheema defeated Progressive Conservative candidate John Baluta by 585, with NDP incumbent Marty Dolin finishing third. The Progressive Conservatives came out of the election with a minority government, and Cheema became a member of the official opposition. Cheema increased his margin of victory in the 1990 provincial election, but the Liberal Party fell to seven seats and third-party status. He resigned his seat on June 17, 1993.

Soon afterwards, he opened a family practice in Surrey, British Columbia. Cheema became involved in several community activities in British Columbia, including acting as chair of the 1998 British Columbia Games for Athletes with Disabilities' medical section.
Although the British Columbia Liberal Party is usually regarded as significantly more right-wing than the Manitoba party, Cheema nevertheless ran as a BC Liberal in that province's 1996 provincial election. He was unsuccessful, finishing 380 votes behind New Democratic Party candidate Ian Waddell in Vancouver-Fraserview.
The BC New Democrats experienced a sharp decline in their popularity between 1996 and 2001, and the provincial Liberals were elected in a landslide in that year's provincial election. Cheema had no difficulty being elected in Surrey-Panorama Ridge, defeating NDP candidate Bruce Ralston by over 6,000 votes. On June 5, 2001, he was appointed Minister of State for Mental Health Services. On January 20, 2004, he was appointed Minister of State for Immigration and Multicultural Services.

Later in 2004, Cheema sought and won the federal Liberal nomination in the new riding of Fleetwood—Port Kells. He was removed from cabinet hours after submitting his nomination papers, and subsequently resigned as a provincial Member of the Legislative Assembly (Canadian politicians seeking federal office are usually required to step down from their provincial responsibilities.) In a relatively close three-way race, Cheema was defeated by Conservative candidate Nina Grewal, 14,052 votes to 11,568 (New Democratic Party candidate Barry Bell received 10,976 votes).

Neil Devindra Bissoondath (born April 19, 1955 in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago) is a Canadian author who lives in Ste-Foy, Quebec. He is a noted writer of fiction, and also an outspoken critic of Canada's system of multiculturalism. He is the nephew of authors V.S. Naipaul and Shiva Naipaul.

Bissoondath attended St. Mary's College in Trinidad and Tobago. Although he was from a Hindu tradition, he was able to adapt to a Catholic high school. Bissoondath describes himself as not very religious and distrustful of dogma. In the early Seventies, political upheaval and economic collapse had created a climate of chaos and violence in the island nation. In 1973, at the age of eighteen, Bissoondath left Trinidad and settled in Ontario, where he studied at York University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in French in 1977. He then taught English and French at the Inlingua School of Languages and the Toronto Language Workshop. He won the McClelland and Stewart award and the National Magazine award, both in 1986, for the short story "Dancing." In 2010 he was made a Chevalier of the Ordre national du Québec.

Robin N. Bawa (born March 26, 1966 in Duncan, British Columbia) is a retired former professional ice hockey player who spent parts of four seasons in the National Hockey League between 1989 and 1994.

Bawa spent 5 productive seasons of junior hockey in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers, but was passed over in the NHL Entry Draft. Finally, after a 57-goal performance in the 1986–87 season, Bawa earned a pro contract from the Washington Capitals.
Bawa would turn pro the following season, spending the year in the IHL with the Fort Wayne Komets. While Bawa had been primarily a skill player in junior, he began to fight more often in pro hockey and developed into an enforcer, as that was his best ticket to the NHL. He would average over 200 penalty minutes in his first three years in Washington's system, finally earning a 5-game callup to the Capitals in 1989–90, during which he scored his first NHL goal against Alain Chevrier and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Bawa played one more season in the Capitals' system, posting 381 penalty minutes in Fort Wayne but not seeing any more NHL action, before being sold to the Vancouver Canucks in 1991. He played 2 games for the Canucks in 1991–92, and set a career high with 27 goals in the IHL.
Early in the 1992–93 season, Bawa would be dealt to the San Jose Sharks, where he would have his most prolonged NHL stint. He spent most of the rest of the season in the NHL, scoring 5 goals in 42 games and posting 47 penalty minutes.
Bawa was exposed in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft and claimed by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He played 12 more NHL games in 1993–94, registering his only career assist.
Following his release from the Ducks, Bawa continued to toil in the IHL for 5 more seasons, three of those back in Fort Wayne, before a concussion ended his career near the end of the 1998–99 season. He finished his IHL career with 106 goals and 188 assists in 610 career games along with 635 penalty minutes.
Bawa is the first person of Indian descent to play in the NHL, where he achieved six goals and one assist in 61 games, while collecting 60 penalty minutes.

Born in India into a Communist family in the Punjab, Bains became a member of the youth wing of the Communist Party of India (CPI). He was dismayed by what he saw as the revisionism of Nikita Khrushchev following the death of Joseph Stalin, and he broke with the CPI when it supported Khrushchev's criticisms of Stalin.
In 1963, he founded the Internationalists,[2] an anti-revisionist organization that supported Mao Zedong's Communist Party of China in the Sino-Soviet split. This organisation (in Canada) ultimately became the Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) (CPC-ML), of which Bains was the founding leader.
In 1967, Bains held a conference in London to determine the future of the anti-revisionist movement, the "Necessity for Change" conference. The Irish Communist Organisation disagreed with the other delegates and walked out of the meeting. Bains was a leader of the anti-revisionist movement internationally, and assisted in establishing Marxist-Leninist parties around the world, such as the Revolutionary Communist Party of Britain (Marxist-Leninist), the Communist Party of Trinidad and Tobago, the Communist Party of Ireland (Marxist-Leninist), and the Communist Ghadar Party of India. Bains was also responsible for the founding of the Hindustani Ghadar Party (Organisation of Indian Marxist-Leninists Abroad). He held a leading influence in the Marxist-Leninist Party, USA in the 1970s. (This party was dissolved in 1993.) Modern Communism has written articles on his Marxist-Leninist legacy.
Many of these parties originally held a "Maoist" position in the 1960s and 1970s, and Bains was often identified as a Maoist. However, following Mao Zedong's death in 1976, they would later reject Mao Zedong Thought, particularly through the experience of the Sino-Albanian split. Following the leadership of Enver Hoxha and the Albanian Party of Labour, Bains' anti-revisionism deepened in the sense of opposition both to the European revisionism (Khrushchev, Josip Broz Tito and Eurocommunism) and to the Chinese revisionism.
A memorial was erected in the honour of Bains and other CPC-ML "fallen comrades" in Ottawa's Beechwood Cemetery. Poet George Elliot Clarke published a poem titled "Homage to Hardial Bains" in 2000 in the Oyster Boy Review. Bains was attacked posthumously by Ben Seattle in an article on Leninism.org entitled In memory of a charlatan.
Bains wrote several books, including Necessity for Change!, Modern Communism, Visiting Cuba, If You Love Your Class and Thinking About the Sixties, as well as many more articles, pamphlets and speeches.
Sandra L. Smith, his widow, also served as leader of the CPC-ML.

Ashish Bagai (born January 26, 1982) is the captain of the Canadian cricket team. He is a right-handed batsman who specializes as a wicketkeeper. He studied at St. Columba's School during his brief stay in Delhi, India. He moved to Canada at the age of 11.
His first taste of cricket came in the inaugural Under-15s Cricket World Cup in 1996, in which he was voted the tournament's best wicketkeeper. He had the highest batting average in the Under-19s World Cup in January - February 2000. Going to the 2002 Under-19s World Cup, his batting was invaluable, securing a tie with Bangladesh.
He has since become a mainstay of the Canadian cricket team. He has played 52 One Day Internationals, more than any other Canadian player. Indeed, he has played every Canadian ODI since he made his debut in the 2003 World Cup against Bangladesh. The only Canadian ODIs he has not played in were the three that took place before he was born.
Despite his ever-present position in the Canadian ODI team, he missed the 2005 ICC Trophy, though he did play the 2001 tournament, the highlight of which was an innings that took the Canadians to victory over the UAE after spending a night in hospital due to being hit in the face when keeping.
He holds the Canadian record for highest ODI score after his unbeaten 137 in a losing cause against Scotland. He added 100 runs for 4th wicket with Asif Mulla which was the first ever century stand for Canada in an ODI.
Bagai captained the Canadian team during the 2011 Cricket World Cup and made 64* against Kenya of 97 balls as Canada won their first match of the tournament. This was the second World Cup win Canada had registered. Against New Zealand in the following ODI he scored 84 of 87 balls and he shared a 100+ partnership with Jimmy Hansra, Hansra eventually made 70*. However Canada lost by 70 runs as New Zealand managed to score 358 in the first innings.
