Né à Téhéran, en Iran, Khosro Berahmandi peint depuis l’âge de 25 ans. Ses années de formation le conduisent de l’université Western Ontario à l’Université Concordia de Montréal et à l’Université de Paris VIII où il obtient une maîtrise en arts plastiques.

Artiste accompli et prolifique, lauréat de plusieurs bourses du Conseil des Arts du Canada, Khosro Berahmandi, s’engage fréquemment dans divers projets artistiques. Parmi les plus récents, mentionnons le spectacle multidisciplinaire Éclats nocturne (2009) et le projet de danse Baiser tellurique (2010) qui explore la relation entre son art et d’autres formes d’expressions artistiques. Il a participé déjà à une quarantaine d’expositions en solo et de groupe au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe.

Trois livres d’art ont été consacrés à l’art de Khosro Berahmandi. Le premier, Le même à l’écart (2009, Maison d’édition Ketabe Iran Canada), présente l’art de cet artiste aux côtés des poètes iraniens Yadola Royai, Hossein Sharang, Hossein Model et Bahman Sadighi. Le deuxième, Oubli et silence (2010, Maison d’édition Ketabe Iran Canada), est une rétrospective de son travail artistique des années 2002 à 2010 préfacé par Bahman Sadighi. Enfin, le troisième, Traversée des feux (2012, Édition du Noroît) présente ses peintures et les poèmes de José Acquelin, de Martine Audet, de Paul Bélanger, de Yadolah Royaï, de Bahman Sadihgi et de Hossein Sharagn, que ces peintures ont inspirés.

Khosro Berahmandi, Iranian-born painter, moved to Canada in 1983. He currently lives and works in Montreal. Graduate in Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, as well as the University of Paris VIII, he has already participated in over thirty solo and group exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe. Recipient of several awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, he is engaged in various artistic projects exploring the relationship between his art and other forms of artistic expressions. Three art books on Khosro’s work have already been published by Maison d’édition Ketabe Iran Canada and by Les éditions du Noroît. Khosro is presented by MEKIC gallery in Montreal and Queen gallery in Toronto.

In his early twenties, during his technical studies at the university, he let himself be carried away by the overwhelming sweep of the Iranian revolution and the dream of living in a free Iran. His dream was soon destroyed by the harsh reality of the Islamic revolution. Deeply affected by the loss of his close friends and his ideas, he left his Iran and found refuge and safety in Rome after crossing two countries on foot.

Khosro completed his first painting in his early twenties on the cover of Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment while he still lived in Iran. It would be another 2 years before Khosro once again picked up his paintbrush shortly after he arrived in Canada as a political refugee. He sought an outlet to express the break he felt after leaving home. As he entered a space that was quite different from anything he had previously experienced. He discovered painting gave him a new language to communicate with. Khosro soon enrolled at The University of Western Ontario, studying with Paterson Ewen, an eminent Canadian painter. After a short trip to Montreal, Khosro decided he needed to live in this city that was buzzing with the excitement of an active arts community. Khosro completed his bachelor’s degree at Concordia University. His fervor for visual arts next took him to the University of Paris where he gained a masters degree in Plastic Arts. The charm of Montreal had not left him and he returned to the city in 1995. Khosro’s work has been shown in over 30 exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.

Based in Montreal since 1995, he contributes to the cultural life of the metropolis with his exhibitions and painting courses, as well as his involvement with Festival Accès Asie. Europe and North America opened his eyes and his heart to Western and contemporary art through its museums and its teachers. His style of painting is faithful to its origins and its outstanding vision. From Iran, he keeps the cultural heritage and the millennium pictorial tradition of the miniatures that had penetrated his childhood and his adolescence.
